normal flesh tone for a not normal flesh colour, like grey or
blue as I have done here, the same strictures for neatness
and positions of highlights and shadows all apply. So let’s get
right down to it.
Alien Grey
This figure inspired me to paint her as a classic grey alien
beloved by conspiracy theorists, even though she has four
eyes. The colour highlights to a very light grey in the end,
which is ideal for flesh, where highlights can be that much
more exaggerated because of the shininess and luminosity of
skin. Although it being alien, it can be anything you want it to
be, as it happens I think the grey is a more realistic flesh tone
than the blue.
ALIEN
FLESH
ALIEN FLESH FOR STARGRAVE
Normal Skin
It was suggested to me that I have written quite a lot on
painting normal or near normal skin colours of all sorts,
including fantasy and sometimes with no skin at all, but I
hadn’t written about proper alien skin, in a Stargrave way. So I
am now attempting to redress that balance, a bit. Both these
models could have been painted in standards flesh tones and
would have looked just fine too.
Not Normal Skin
In all honesty there isn’t much more to it than substituting
Like normal skin I start with the eyes, which are just a tad
more complicated than usual as they are red, and needed a
quite careful treatment. I first painted the eyes white in an
attempt to give the red a solid brightness and worked up the
red on top of the white as undercoat.
Eyes
Paint the eyes Matt White first, just like if you were doing
normal human eyes, then.
1.
Dragon Red, covering the white completely.
2.
Dragon Red plus Pure Red, this goes on the bottom
half of the eyeball leaving the darker red at the top of the
eyeball.
3.
Pure Red, again this goes at the bottom of the eyeball.
4.
Pure Red plus Lava Orange, a final highlight for the
bottom of the eyeball.
5.
A Matt White dot, as a fake reflection, like you would
when painting jewels. This frankly seems a lot of trouble to go
to but it does really sell the eyes liquid nature.

Red, on the bottom of the

Orange, a final highlight for
the bottom of the eyeball.
5. A Matt White dot, as a fake
reflection, like you would
when painting jewels.
Skin
Same as if you were doing normal skin, face and hand to
match. I wanted quite a smooth finish to her face so I didn’t
leave many deep shadows. But I did want to give her veins
and splotches on her head in a contrasting colour.
1.
Castle Grey, over the whole face and hands.
2.
Filthy Cape.
3.
Stone Golem.

Alien Blue
The other alien’s skin is much more normal in facial shape
apart from her prosthetics, so it’s really only a matter of colour
substitutions, blue for flesh, but before the skin the eyes (or
eye in this case) as usual. I meant her to represent the sort of
alien that used to turn up in 60’s TV SF having found her way
to the Stargrave universe.
Eye and Lenses
I painted both Matt White first like the eyes above. The pupil
of her left eye is Deep Blue mixed with and spot of Oak Brown
to take the brightness down a bit.
