The Empire has responded to the uprising by deploying several companies of Imperial Army troopers. These professional soldiers are well equipped and trained to fight in small units. They are supported by so-called ‘loyalists’, though they are really little more than impressed convicts, hired thugs and pro-imperial zealots, armed by the Empire for use as garrison troops or, if circumstances require it, bullet shields. Finally, the Empire has hired teams of alien mercenaries to operate outside the official chain of command. Sometimes they act as bounty hunters or assassins, targeting rebel leaders with precision or eliminating rebel cells covertly. Sometimes, as in this case, these mercenaries are little more than terror troops, slaughtering anyone even suspected of sympathising with the rebellion.
